Why Use Cloth?
Monetary - Babies will go through 8-12 diapers a day, which computes to over 9000 diaper changes by age 2 1/2, the average age of potty training. At $0.25 per disposable diaper, that adds up to $2,250! Disposable wipes will cost at least another $300, a total cost of $2,550 per child using disposables. Purchasing 20 diapers in each of the 3 sizes, 30 cloth wipes and a wet bag to keep them in, will run you approximately $1,000. Considering your laundering costs, about $.45 a load for 14 additional loads per month or $189 over the course of 30 months, you will still save about $1,300 over a 2 ½ year period! Using the same diapers for each subsequent child saves you over $2,350 per child!
Health - Disposable diapers contain sodium polyacrylate which absorbs liquid and turns it into gel. If you’ve used disposable diapers, you will recognize the polymer as the gel-like crystals you may find on your baby’s bottom. Sodium polyacrylate works well to absorb and contain baby messes but is commonly linked to allergic reactions, skin irritations, and possible reproductive organ dysfunction. It was banned from use in tampons in 1985 after it was linked to toxic shock syndrome and caused hemorrhage, cardiovascular failure and death in rats injected with the gel. Ingested, sodium polyacrylate is deadly to children in amounts as little as 5 grams.
The chemical dioxin is reported by the EPA as the most toxic of all cancer-linked chemicals, and is a byproduct of the paper bleaching that is used in disposable diapers. Whitening through the use of dioxin has been banned in most countries…but not in the U.S.
With the toxic chemical exposure of disposable diapers, it is no shock that a study by a major disposable diaper manufacturer shows that the incidence of diaper rash rose from 7.1% to 61% between 1970 & 1995, coinciding with the increase in disposable diaper use.
Cloth diapers are inexpensive and gel and dioxin free!
Environment - A single baby goes through about 9,000 diaper changes before they are potty trained. That adds up to approximately 2,500 lbs of non-biodegradable waste per baby when disposable diapers are used! It is estimated that in a landfill, a disposable diaper will biodegrade in 300-500 years. Recent estimates suggest that 82,000 tons of plastic and 1.8 million tons of wood pulp, (that’s 250,000 trees) are consumed on an annual basis in the production of disposable diapers. Add to that the waste that is contained in the diaper, what is keeping that from leaking into our ground water supply?!
Use cloth - is there really any other choice, now that you know the facts?
