Caring for your Cloth Diapers

All new diapers, liners, and doublers need to be washed at least once before using in order to remove any fabric markings or finishes, which may irritate your baby's skin and lessen the absorbency of the diaper.

Any additional pre-use instructions for the particular items you purchased will be included with your order.

What do I do with the diapers until wash day?
I recommend the dry pail, no soak method.  I just can’t seem to promote creating a sewer-like environment in your home.

Dry-Pail Method
You will need a pail with a lid.  Walmart has them for $8 or $9.  You will need 2 wetbags, one for the pail and one to replace it with while washing the other.  Scrape poo (see method below) into toilet and place all wet and soiled diapers in the lined diaper pail until wash day.  You should wash your diapers at least every 72 hours, as bacteria multiplies rapidly after that time.  To ward off odors, you can sprinkle baking soda on the diapers.

Rinsing Soiled Diapers
Admittedly, this is the worst part about cloth diapering.  If you are able to wash your diapers every other day and can use HOT water, rinsing is not necessary.  Newborn and Breastfed poo will wash away in the wash cycle.  Once your child begins eating, or when you find the poo is not washing out, you will have to scrape the poo into the toilet.  What’s the best way?  I keep a tall tubular Wet-One’s container, still full of wet ones, on the back of the toilet, I’ve poured some rubbing alcohol in it…I stick a butter knife in it…not the good silver….get one at the dollar store….Scrape the diaper and return the knife to the container. Place the diaper in the Pail.

Treating Stains on Diapers & Covers
Stains happen, especially with diapering. Rubbing the stained area with a bar of "laundry” soap like Fels Naptha, can do wonders on diapers and covers, and really any stains; grass, coffee, etc.  Dampen the fabric, rRub the soap on, rub the fabric together gently in the stained area and throw in the washer.

Washing Diapers
Pull the wet bag out of the pail and take the the washer.  Dump the diapers in the wash, making sure all inserts are removed and laundry tabs fastened, toss the wetbag in, too.  Always do a cold pre-wash with no detergent.  This rinses out the solids and keeps stains from setting.  Then run a HOT wash cycle using 1/3- ½ of the recommended amount of an all-purpose laundry detergent. I recommend a free & clear type, as other detergents contain additives, brighteners and softeners that can cause build up and stink issues with your diapers.  Open the washer and sniff, if they don’t smell fresh, or smell like....nothing, run another cold wash cycle with no detergent.  I have formulated a recipe for laundry detergent.....Diva Detergent.  It has been tested by many cloth-diapering mamas and works well in all areas of the country with varying water qualities.  It works well on all laundry and has been used by many with skin sensitivieis without issues, and will save you a ton of money over Allen's or Charlie's, both detergents highly recommended for cloth diaper, but just so darn expensive. You may purchase the recipe on my accessories page.

Caring for Diaper Covers

Ideally, a soiled diaper cover should be rinsed as soon as possible to prevent staining.  It can then be placed in the diaper pail until wash day.

What to Avoid
NEVER use chlorine bleaches, detergents that contain bleach alternatives, fabric softeners, pure soap products like Ivory Snow, and harsh detergents like Tide.

Stripping Diapers
Depending on your water conditions and the detergents you use.  You may find that after time, your diapers may begin to repel and start to stink.  You will need to strip your diapers.  I recommend using RLR, which can be found in the laundry aisle at Walmart or your grocery store (if you can't find it locally, it can be purchases online).  If you are unable to find RLR, you can use 2 Tablespoons of Dawn Dish Liquid.  Run a Hot cycle adding Dawn.  Continue running Hot cycles until there are absolutely NO suds in your washer.  Follow with a final rinse cycle with ½ cup vinegar.  Dry as usual.
